Est. 1898

Lysne is proud to be celebrating more than 125 years of ministry!

In December of 1898, 11 men met in the home of Halvor O. Holm to discuss the possibility of forming a new congregation. When they left the meeting, the men had formed not a new church, but a canvassing committee, agreeing the discuss the idea with their neighbors. Two weeks later, after receiving positive feedback, they returned to take the official founding vote.

The “first eleven” named the new congregation Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a reminder that God was with them in this new endeavor. At the first Annual Meeting, members voted to rename the church Lysne Lutheran Church after a congregation in Hallingdal, Norway.

For the first decade after its founding, members of Lysne gathered in the District No. 93 school building. In 1908, plans were drawn up and construction started on a new church building. Much of the labor was provided by members of the congregation and, by the next summer, the first worship service was held in the new space. Though there have been many additions and renovations since then, Lysne members still gather in that original building.
